Renaming of General Vasile Milea Boulevard to Queen Maria Boulevard

A.L.E.G. welcomes the proposal on the agenda of the Sibiu City Council meeting of 27 August 2026, which proposes renaming General Vasile Milea Boulevard to Queen Maria Boulevard.

A.L.E.G. has repeatedly called on Sibiu City Council to ensure a more balanced representation of women in the city’s public memory. Currently, only five streets in Sibiu are named after women, compared to 236 named after men. This imbalance is not merely a statistic: street names convey who and what contributions we consider worthy of recognition and preservation in the collective memory.

The choice of Queen Marie for one of Sibiu’s main boulevards represents a concrete step towards a more gender-balanced and inclusive public space. At the same time, it is an opportunity to reconsider the name of an important boulevard associated with Vasile Milea, the Minister of National Defence in December 1989, who was involved in the repression of the Revolution.

In its letter to local councillors, A.L.E.G. encourages them to vote in support of the proposal.

In 2022, A.L.E.G. wrote to Sibiu City Council regarding the issue of women’s invisibility in public spaces, making a series of specific recommendations to address the problem. A.L.E.G. also submitted a specific list of suggested names for the (re)naming of certain streets, including General Vasile Milea Boulevard – this can be accessed here. This initiative is part of the ‘Sibiu for Equal Rights’ campaign, through which A.L.E.G. has made a series of recommendations on local public policy over the years. Integrating a gender perspective into the plans and projects of the Local Council is one of the key recommendations of this campaign, and the initiative to increase the visibility of women in public spaces forms part of this campaign.
