A.L.E.G. Association, together with Tatiana Kolot is organizing empowerment through self defense courses (ESD) to support ukrainian children and women based in Sibiu, Romania. Tatiana was selected and supported by our team to get a certification in ESD method in Prague this year and now she works in collaboration with us, delivering this workshop for international groups (UA community and Romanian community but not only), as she can organise these events also in English.\u00a0The empowerment-based model of self-defense training includes physical self defense techniques, but also a comprehensive range of tactics including verbal techniques, awareness skills, confidence-building practices, and more.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The empowerment model includes a focus on honoring and expanding the choices of participants, particularly those who have survived trauma and discrimination. Empowerment Self Defense is a system designed by and for women to:<\/p>\n

\u25b6\u00a0 Avoid danger and de-escalate conflict.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u25b6\u00a0 Increase confidence in participating in social and economic systems.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u25b6\u00a0 Increase self-efficacy in problem-solving.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u25b6\u00a0 Build physical self defense skills.\u200b<\/p>\n

\u25b6\u00a0 Address violence that is most likely to occur in individual settings (e.g., school, home, workplace).\u200b<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The five principles of Empowerment Self Defense encompass a variety of skills that connect us to our strength within and help protect our emotional and physical well-being. In Empowerment Self Defense training, we learn that we can carry these skills with us everywhere we go and that we are free to use them when our boundaries are crossed.<\/p>\n

  1. Think. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cThink\u201d means looking inward and asking how you feel. When assessing a situation, it\u2019s important to ask:<\/p>\n

    \u25b6 Does this feel right?<\/p>\n

    \u25b6 What do we want to happen?<\/p>\n

    \u25b6 What do we want to not happen?<\/p>\n

    When we don\u2019t have clear answers, we can tune into our gut feelings and intuition. Sometimes, we may not like what we discover, or we may feel fear, but emotions and instincts are there to help us respond and protect ourselves. It\u2019s important to listen to our bodies. A pounding heart, sweaty hands and shaking limbs, suddenly feeling chilled or overheated, are messages that something isn\u2019t right.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Yell<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Once we have identified what we want to happen and not happen, we use the power of our voices to make our needs and wants clear. \u201cYell\u201d doesn\u2019t necessarily mean shouting. It can mean expressing your inner voice by setting clear, verbal boundaries.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Run <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        You have every right to walk away from places or conversations that make you uncomfortable, regardless of anyone else\u2019s feelings.<\/p>\n

        However, turning your back and running away may not be the safest option. Sometimes, running away is impossible or might increase your risk of danger.<\/p>\n

        In those cases, we can and must draw on other self defense tools.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Fight<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          When running away isn\u2019t an option, you can use the strongest parts of your body against the weak parts of an assailant\u2019s body to neutralize threatening forces.<\/p>\n

          When attacked, you have every right to defend yourself. The \u201cfighting\u201d aspect of self defense is not assault. It is defensive fighting that is meant to protect you and neutralize any assailant who is trying to hurt you.<\/p>\n

          1. Tell<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            If you\u2019ve faced any type of violence, you\u2019ve been through something difficult and you deserve support. To \u201ctell\u201d is to find a safe space, and someone or a group of people who will listen to you, believe you, accept you, and support you without judgment or blame. Keeping yourself emotionally safe means finding or building, a supportive environment in which you can tell your story without fear of punishment or judgment of the choices you\u2019ve made.<\/p>\n
