In 2015, the current international development framework “The Millennium Development Goals” which guided UN activities since 2000 will be replaced with a new strategy. Among the main Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Gender Equality and Improving Maternal Health and Reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS featured prominently, issues that fall within the mission statement of A.L.E.G.

At present, numerous NGOs, governments and other significant stakeholders are coming together in regional and global meetings in order to assess the outcomes of the MDG framework as well as to identify new challenges that demand coordinated efforts by the international community. Debates over what issues should be included in this new strategy are already on their wayas a global consultation process – The World We Want.

A.L.E.G is contributing to the MDG review process as part of its advocacy strategy on gender equality and women’s rights.

Irina Costache prepared and presented a report on health priorities reflecting A.L.E.G.’s mission statement and the interests of its beneficiaries at a regional consultation organized by ASTRA Network and Eastern European Alliance for Reproductive Choice (EEARC), held in Moscow on 26-27th of January 2013.

The report, titled “Framing the Future Goal in CEE- Views from Romania” stressed the importance of promoting the principle of universal health coverage for overcoming inequalities in access to quality health care and proposed as future development health areas improving women’s health and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights. The report also gives a thorough overview of changes in the health system in Romania and its impact on the MDGs addressing health and gender equality.

rina will also travel to Botswana to take part in the high-level meeting, bringing together government representatives, NGO coalitions and key UN partners, on health priorities in the post 2015 development agenda where she will be presenting the views expressed in the outcome document of the ASTRA-EEARC meeting in Moscow.
